Bryson Adventures
Eco-Tourism/Cultural Tours

Tanzania is a country that is blessed with cultural diversity yet is successfully united. With 120 indiginous tribes and languages molded into one nation. Their cultural heritage is important to the people of Tanzania and is a soucre of pride. With so many tribes, we can only focus here on a few . That is an indication of space resources here, not limitations in what we can show you in the country. Please feel free to contact us for other options and more details.

Bryson Adventures - Maasai

Maasai

The Maasai, who roam the Maasai Steppe in and near the Northern Safari Circuit, are the most popular tribe to visit. Traditionally, Maasai live entirely off of animals, tending goats and cattle. Their main diet is milk mixed with cattle blood (by nicking the juglar vein, they cause no harm to the animal) They roam with their herds to wherever the best grazing land is at the present time. Although known as fierce warriors, they are very friendly people who welcome visitors. During a visit, you will get the opportunity to go inside one of their dwellings, participate in their song and dance, see their legendary jumping abilities, and learn about their traditional culture.

Bryson Adventures - Hadzabe Tribe

Hadzabe

The Hadzabe is another very unique tribe to visit. While the women forage for edible vegitation, the males hunt by poison arrows any game ranging from mice to giraffe. The favored meat is babboon. Their shelters are so temporary that often when a large game is killed such as a giraffe, the tribe will relocate to the kill site rather than attempt to transport the game. The clothing of the Hadzabe is also opportunistic, wearing anything from donated western style clothing to animal skins. Attempts by the government to educate and modernize the lifestyle of the Hadzabe have to present failed but their available hunting grounds are diminishing and their lifestyle is in danger. The Hadzabe welcome visitors and may also be invited to join in on a hunt. While hunting is a daily event, the majority of their diet is foraged roots and berries. They are expert honey gatherers, and have an excellent knowledge of natural medicines. With cililization encroaching ever closer, it is driving away much of the larger game that was once hunted, making this lifestyle ever more difficult.

Bryson Adventures - Chagga Tribe

Chagga

The Chagga is a tribe that inhabits the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the surrounding villages. Their location makes for a great day trip from Moshi or Arusha. The Chagga have assimilated into modern society in the cities well and hold many positions of leadership but they still keep many traditions in the small villages. There are many intersting stories about the Chagga and their religion, their existance during WW1, their wars against the Maasai. A visit to their banana and coffee plantations along with visiting one of the beautiful area waterfalls and surrounding rainforest, makes for a lovely and memorable daytrip from Moshi or Arusha.

Bryson Adventures - Pare Tribe

Pare

The Pare is another tribe located in the Kilimanjaro Region, predominately to the east of Moshi, in and around the beautiful Pare Mountains. This tribe consists largely of farmers, still using traditional methods and farming by hand. There are many interesting stories about their past traditions and they are well known for their knowldege of herbal medicines. You will learn about their native religion (no longer widely practriced) and visit their places of sacrifice. The Pare Mountains are a great location for hiking and seeing the Tanzania unknown to most tourists, located very near to Tanzania's newest national park, Mkomazi.

All the tribes listed above are located near the Northern Safari Circuit and a visit is an easy addition to a Northern Circuit Safari.

Bryson Adventures - Zanzibar

Zanzibar, famous for its fascinating history, romantic tales of kings and princesses, racial/religious mix, peace and tranquility, is a paradise for those wishing to escape from the stresses of the Western world. It is a heaven for those who love swimming, water sports, game fishing or just undiluted relaxation. It offers fabulous SCUBA and snorkeling and is home to some of the most luxurious resorts in the world. Both Pembe and Zanzibar islands are blessed with palm lined white sand beaches, coral reefs, sea turtles and other virgin marine life.

As for history, culture and art, Zanzibar is the junction of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. It was the origin of the trading route to Africa (thus the birth place of the trading language of Swahili) with a mulitude of items traded ranging from spices to slaves. In more recent times, only Zanzibar's exotic mix could serve as the birthplace for the late legendary rock star Freddy Mercury. Old Stone Town, with its fascinating mixture of architecture, has been honored by UNESCO as a 'World Heritage Site'.

To the eco-tourist, one has the chance to visit the spice plantations, swimming with dolfins and touring the unique Jozani Forest Reserve to see the rare Red Colobus monkeys.
